While Motorola is one of the top low-cost phone manufacturers, it also offers an interesting array of midrange options in its Moto Z lineup. The Z series is best known for its compatibility with Moto Mods, detachable peripherals that connect to the phone via magnets and pogo pins. But if you're not a die-hard Moto Z enthusiast or you aren't in one of the few, small areas with 5G coverage, it's simply not a great value compared with the similarly priced Google Pixel 3a XL. If you're familiar with the Moto Z series, the Z4 won't seem like much of a departure.

From the front, it looks pretty similar to its predecessor, the Moto Z3 , with a few exceptions. First, the display is slightly bigger, at 6. The bezels have been reduced as well, thanks to a teardrop camera notch on the top of the phone and no branding on the bottom. Overall, the phone measures 6. Flip the phone and you'll see that Motorola has opted for a more durable aluminum back, as opposed to the Z3's glass.

Otherwise it's mostly unchanged. There's the same circular camera stack toward the top of the phone, above the Motorola logo, and two rows of pogo pins at the bottom for attaching Moto Mods. Both the volume rocker and a textured power button sit on the right. The power button is relatively small and the volume rocker can be hard to reach with small hands, but both are responsive and offer a satisfying click. Instead of incorporating a fingerprint sensor in the Z4's power button as it has in the past, Motorola is using an in-display fingerprint sensor this time around. While this should be a welcome change for lefties, it doesn't work very well.

In testing it only worked properly about 35 percent of the time, so we ultimately reverted to using a PIN to access the phone. As mentioned, the Z4 has a 6. At nits, it's bright enough to see in any room. And while the display is the perfect size for streaming multimedia, color accuracy is an issue. In our lab tests, colors consistently registered as oversaturated. In fact, green was so oversaturated that at first we thought there was a problem with our test equipment. After testing other phones, however, we determined our results for the Z4 are correct.

By comparison, the Pixel 3a XL offers a much more accurate experience. As far as durability, the aluminum back helps make the phone less prone to damage by accidental drops. That said, the display is made of Gorilla Glass 3, which can definitely break with a hard drop.

And Motorola continues to resist the urge to add any sort of IP protection to the phone, so any contact with water will result in disaster. Your best bet is to get a sturdy and waterproof case, but those are hard to find, since Moto Mods require a magnetic connection and access to the row of pogo pins at the bottom of the phone.

There is a special 5G Moto Mod that attaches to the back of the phone for Verizon customers who want to give 5G a try. That means coverage will basically be nonexistent unless you're within a few hundred feet of a tower with direct line of sight. Overall call quality is excellent. Our tests came across clear, and noise cancellation worked perfectly on every call.

Data speeds on Verizon's network in a congested area of downtown Manhattan were impressive as well, with average speeds of 47Mbps up and 58Mbps down. The Z4 has a single top-ported speaker that also serves as the earpiece. At 96dB, it's more than loud enough to fill a room, but it sounds poor. In our tests, we encountered static and tinny undertones at high volumes. Wi-Fi is supported on the 2. NFC is also included for mobile payments through Google Play.

It's nearly identical to what you'll find in the Pixel 3a XL, though its processor is theoretically faster. Overall, performance on the Z4 is solid. There's no lag when opening apps, and multitasking between a dozen or so apps is effortless. Gaming is possible as well; we didn't encounter any lag or skipped frames during an extended Asphalt 8 session. See How We Test Phones. On PCMark 2.
