Samsung says its new wide-angle lens has the same viewing angle as the human eye, too.

The Samsung Galaxy A80 stands out for its notch-free display.

I got to handle one earlier today, and the significant part here is that the wide-angle functions can now pull double shifts for both landscapes and crowded selfies. So this rotating camera: It sounds like the solution for getting the best camera for any situation, and freeing up the screen to be the perfect rectangle, sans notches and punch holes. It all happens once you're in the camera app.

Press the on-screen button that typically switches between front- and rear-facing cameras and the back of the phone will extend. Tiny motors whirr, and this motion rotates the camera array as it moves, spinning the lenses and sensors around to face you. The phone is now roughly half an inch longer, with a recessed band on the back.

It's slick. Very slick. But it does make even the P30 Pro seem reasonably sized. I do have concerns about whether this mechanism can handle hundreds of rotations. Introducing a mechanical motion into a smartphone, with the constant threat of pocket fluff, grit and the rest, sounds like a recipe for trouble.

The mechanism got flustered if you manually tried to retract the phone down, instead of letting the A80 pull itself back, but this was early hands-on reveal day -- Samsung should have ample time to sort any teething issues before May 29th. I noticed that all that technology along the upper edge of the Galaxy A80 does make the phone a little top-heavy too -- be careful how you handle it. For video, Samsung's "super steady" video mode reduces video shake, and AI-powered Scene Optimizer will be able to enhance up to 30 scenes. Oh, and a Flaw Detection feature that will pick up on glitches before you click apparently.

Now, if you want to install the firmware update manually, check out the full-depth guide below. As we speak, the update is rolling over the air and will hit users via device notification. If you have not received the update, then you can manually check for the software update. The version is already running on some of the compatible devices and will hit more devices by Android 10 brings the much-awaited system-wide dark mode feature.

The last generation One UI was so much polished and enhanced for the performance to design ratio. Now, the improved latest generation One UI 2. The One UI 2. It has nice looking icons, animations, lesser distraction, one-handed using interface, more useful shortcuts, themes, stock apps, improved navbar, and more.

Where you might expect to also see a telephoto lens for your zoom work, there's instead a time of flight sensor for providing more accurate bokeh effects on your portrait shots. Of course, because the camera rotates, this is exactly the same around the "front" of the phone, because you're using the same lenses and sensors. As with all pop-up cameras, there's going to be a short delay while it pops up and rotates the camera lens array, and it would be a good idea to keep it as free from grit and dust as possible.

Samsung's Galaxy A series phones are still mid-range offerings, so it's little surprise that Samsung packs the decidedly mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon into the Galaxy A Where the Galaxy A80 is somewhat limited is in storage capacity. Samsung's track record with Android updates is a little better than many of its competitors, although it's not usually all that quick to upgrade full Android versions.

The included capacity of 3,mAh on the Samsung Galaxy A80 is fair but not great for a phone at this price point, but it's well in line with the battery capacities Samsung provided for its phones. We're yet to put the Galaxy A80 through its battery testing paces, but our experience with Samsung's crop of phones tended towards ordinary battery performance compared to many phones in the same price bracket. The Galaxy A80 does support fast wired charging at up to 25W, but there's no onboard wireless charging capability.

While it has never said why, we'd guess it was because the asking price put it far too close to the Samsung Galaxy S10e to make it really viable. It has been available for some time through direct importers and as it's gotten a little older we've seen that price drop somewhat. At the same time, Samsung Australia has announced more compelling Galaxy A series options, such as the 5G-capable Samsung Galaxy A90 with full local warranty support. The Samsung Galaxy A80 provides an interesting glimpse into how Samsung may handle future full-screen phones, but if you were keen on buying one, it'd definitely be worth looking for a good deal.
